Our Story
& Mission

LaoDharma.org is the world’s open gateway to Lao Buddhist wisdom — a free, bilingual, non-commercial digital sanctuary preserving the teachings, culture, and spiritual heritage of Lao Buddhism for present and future generations.

A tradition that deserved
a home on the internet

The Lao Buddhist tradition is one of the world’s most ancient and enduring Theravāda lineages — shaped by 700 years of the Lane Xang Kingdom, carried across oceans by the Lao diaspora, and embodied in thousands of temples from Luang Prabang to Virginia. And yet, for all its richness, it had almost no comprehensive, accurate, free, bilingual educational resource available to the world.

The Walk for Peace changed that. When Lao Theravāda monks walked 2,300 miles across America in 2026 — barefoot, in silence, in saffron robes — they introduced millions of Americans to a tradition they had never encountered. People followed the walk, asked questions, and searched online for answers. What they found was insufficient. What they needed was LaoDharma.org.

This site was built in response to that need — and in service of the Lao Buddhist community that has sustained this tradition for generations, and that deserves to see it honored, accurately represented, and freely accessible to the world.

Four commitments —
that will never change

💛 Free — always, for everyone

LaoDharma.org will never charge for access. No subscriptions, no paywalls, no advertising. The Dhamma is not a commodity. This site exists to serve — not to extract.

✍️ Bilingual — English and Lao

Every page on this site presents content in both English and Lao — making it accessible to global seekers while honoring the tradition in its own voice. The Lao script is not decoration. It is cultural preservation.

📚 Scholarly and accurate

Every teaching, every historical claim, every translation is grounded in reliable sources — the Pāli Canon, qualified monks, accredited scholars, and the community’s own knowledge. We do not sensationalize or simplify beyond accuracy.

🌏 In service of the diaspora

The Lao diaspora — particularly the second and third generations growing up outside Laos — is the primary community this site was built for. Their connection to this tradition matters. This site is here to strengthen it.

Three circles of
our community

LaoDharma.org serves three overlapping communities — each with different needs and different relationships to the tradition:

🪷
The Lao Diaspora — in America, France, Australia, and beyond

Families who have maintained the tradition across generations; second and third-generation Lao-Americans reconnecting with their heritage; anyone for whom Laos is home in memory and in heart.

☸️
Theravāda practitioners — from any background

Serious students of the Theravāda tradition who want to understand the Lao expression of the teachings — including meditators, scholars, monks, and laypeople from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Western world.

🌍
Universal seekers — drawn to wisdom without barriers

Anyone who encountered the Walk for Peace monks and felt something stir. Anyone curious about meditation, about Buddhist ethics, about how an ancient tradition meets the modern world. All are welcome here.

🙏 A note of gratitude

LaoDharma.org exists because of the monks, teachers, scholars, community elders, and ordinary Lao families who have carried this tradition across centuries and oceans. Every article on this site rests on their lives and their faithfulness. We offer this work to them, and to the future generations who will carry the tradition further.
