Lao Culture
& Heritage
ວັດທະນະທຳ ແລະ ມໍລະດົກລາວ
Lao culture is one of mainland Southeast Asia’s most distinctive and enduring civilizations — shaped by 700 years of Buddhist kingdoms, the rhythms of the Mekong, the Lao language and its ancient script, and a diaspora that has carried this heritage to every corner of the world.
Culture inseparable

ວັດທະນະທຳ ທີ່ແຍກຈາກສາສະໜາພຸດ ບໍ່ໄດ້
In Laos, culture and Buddhism are not separate domains — they are the same river flowing in the same direction. The Lao New Year is a Buddhist water-blessing ceremony. Sticky rice is offered to monks at dawn. The Lao script was developed to transmit Buddhist scripture. Classical dance enacts Jātaka stories. Even larb — the national dish — is served at merit-making ceremonies. To understand Lao culture is to understand Lao Buddhism, and vice versa.
This section explores the cultural heritage of the Lao people — from the founding of the Lane Xang Kingdom to Pi Mai water festivals, from the ancient Lao alphabet to Mor Lam music, from sticky rice to the diaspora communities that have made a home far from the Mekong while keeping the Lao spirit alive.
